The Club was formed in 1911 and currently has around 90 playing members. We are a truly mixed club with no separate sections for men and ladies. West Hoathly has an enviable reputation not just for its superb facilities but also for its laid-back, no "airs & graces" approach to the sport of bowls. The green was originally laid in 1934 as a sporting 4-rinker and this served the Club well until 1982 when it was extended to become a 6 rink green The pavilion was first built in 1982 to replace the famous green hut. Little money was available for this project and, without the very generous support of West Hoathly Parish Council who matched funding of the materials on a "pound for pound" basis, then the pavilion would never have been built. Many local companies including Combers and Ibstock Bricks lent their support with deeply discounted prices and a good few donations of materials. In 1992, the pavilion was extended making (just enough) room for short mat bowls and allowing for a new extended bar - hooray! All of this work was undertaken by members and all of the finance came from the Club's own funds. The bowls green was relaid completely in the Autumn of 2001 at a cost of nearly £50,000. This was financed by members with help from West Hoathly Parish Council, Mid Sussex District District Council, the UK National Lottery "Awards for All" scheme, the Mid Sussex Bowls League and Radio Mercury FM. With the exception of the sub-contractor Tony and his digger, remarkably all of the work was carried out by members each one of whom has said "never again!". |
An extension to provide a larger ladies' changing room, etc.was added in 2004/2005 - this was financed by the Club with generous help again from Mid Sussex District Council. In 2005/2006 further improvements have been made to the Bar store and the Gents toilets plus an updating of the kitchen appliances which, like some of our members, were showing signs of age. Once again with a touching eye for priorities, work has been carried out again on the Bar Store to upgrade the chillers for the beer - hooray, again! To read more about the Club's early days CLICK here or go to the "History" link at the bottom of the page For the time being, we have completed most of the improvements to the Green and Pavilion. All that remains now is to decide what to do with the car park. You can safely assume however that improvements will continue to be made and that there will be some other grand plan to enhance the Club facilities just around the corner! West Hoathly Bowls Club is a founder member of the Mid Sussex Bowls League and currently has teams in the Mid Sussex League and the John Spriggs League. For more information on the Mid Sussex Bowls League, please contact us because the League currently does not have its own website. The Club is always happy to host mixed touring teams throughout the week in the summer season. If required, we can offer lunches and/or teas to our visitors. If your Club would like to visit us, please go to contact us and we'll be pleased to see you. |
