West Hoathly Bowls Club - About Our Club

About Our Club

These guidelines are intended to help you understand the workings of the Club and to enjoy all it has to offer.

 THE CLUB

Formed in 1911 the club is affiliated to Bowls England, Sussex Bowls Association and Mid Sussex League.

We are a truly mixed club with no separate sections for men and ladies. The club has an enviable reputation not just for its superb facilities but also for its laid-back, no “airs and graces” approach to the sport of bowls.

We are a self-help club where the members perform all the work to keep the green and clubhouse looking good and functioning well. Any offers to help will always be appreciated!

Club officers, and committees are voted in annually at the AGM and all full members can vote and/or stand for election.

 BOWLING

If you are a beginner we have a qualified coach who can offer you coaching and tips on how to play. You may practice (have a ‘Roll Up‘) whenever the green is not pre-booked for matches or competitions and also if not being cut or treated at the time. Ask other members to be shown how you can reserve a rink.

Access is made available for you to use club equipment (jacks, mats, scoreboards, toilets etc.)
Ask how this is accessed.

Club practice and fun sessions are held each week; look out for details on the notice boards. Dress Code can be casual but ensure you wear flat bowls shoes.

We have scheduled Roll Ups on Tuesday mornings and Friday evenings throughout the season and all are welcome.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

These take place throughout the summer season on weekdays and weekends. Fixtures are played Home and Away; mostly at clubs within a 20 mile radius. You should already have a club handbook detailing the full fixture list.

Simply put your name down on the outside boards for selection for any advertised match (all mixed teams). You can also make yourself 'Available' on the website at westhoathlybowls.org.uk and you will be emailed if selected.

Teams are selected by committee each week and displayed on the outside boards which you need to tick to confirm you can play. Each team will have a Captain for the day and should you have any problems you will need to contact him/her asap. If selected for Home matches please arrive 15 minutes early to assist with setting up the green and clubhouse.

Dress code for matches is either Greys or Whites and this is detailed on the selection sheet and also in your fixture card. Club shirts are available to purchase. Shorts can be worn at Home but for Away fixtures please check first with the Captain.

Teas/Suppers are offered at Home matches for a small charge and a raffle is run. It is our custom after a match to offer your opposite number a drink from the bar. At Away matches there is no match fee payable but petrol money should be offered when sharing transport with others.

During each season Fund Raising and Charity bowls days are run which are noted in your fixture card and will also be  promoted on the club boards and the website.

COMPETITIONS

Like most bowls clubs we hold Internal Competitions with a Finals weekend late in the season. Entries for these competitions need to be put forward early in the season and full details appear in the clubhouse on the competition boards.

County League and similar Representative Competitions are selected by separate committees and posted on the outside boards for you to confirm your availability.

Individual County and External Club Competitions are regularly posted on the competitions board and you may enter these by making up your own teams etc. and sending off application forms and fees. Please note: County entries need to be made by the end of January for competitions for the following season.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Your club Social committee work hard to organise functions throughout both the Summer and Winter seasons. We hope you will support and enjoy all of these. Look on the notice boards and on the website for dates of events.

We have an annual Pre-season buffet and Christmas dinner. During the winter, Short Mat bowls is held every Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening. Line Dancing is on Thursday mornings throughout the year. We hold Quiz and Games nights on various Fridays.

A four day Bowls Tour is organised every September and reservations should be made as early as possible.

The clubhouse is open throughout the Summer season with a well stocked bar and darts to entertain you.

 TEA & BAR ROTA

You will be asked to help out with either or both Tea and Bar duty and all will be explained. You may swap unsuitable dates with other members if inconvenient.
