West Hoathly Bowls Club News story

MEN'S COUNTY FINALS 2021 - Results from the weekend

26 Jul 2021

Despite the bleak weather forecast for the weekend Saturday afternoon turned out to be quite sunny and warm when our Triples team of Gordon, Roy and Dave Dawson, took on the Lindfield triples team at 2.30 pm on Saturday 24th July at Horsham Bowls Club.  The game was very close with our team producing some wonderful bowls.  Unfortunately for us the Lindfield skip was determined to deny us our victory and, although we had led most of the game, we lost on the last couple of ends.

It was a different story on the Sunday, the rain was constant so out came the wet gear. West Hoathly were in the finals of the Double Fours (The Abergavenny) and were playing against Spartan & Lakeside.  The conditions were not ideal but, as we say, it was the same for both teams.  Spartan & Lakeside coped slightly better with the conditions and went on to beat West Hoathly.

The weather was not much improved in the afternoon but we still had one game to go, Chris Champion was in the final of the Unbadged Singles against Andy Collyer of White Rock.  Another exciting final when Chris overcame Andy and won the match 21:17.

Despite coming runners up in two of the games we must congratulate our men on reaching the final, a feat not achieved by many of the clubs we play against.  To lose in a final is nothing to be ashamed of and they can all pat themselves on the back for a job well done.  We must also remember that, as a finalist in the Triples, Gordon, Roy and Dave are off to Leamington Spa on 19th August to compete in the National Finals.  We wish them the best of luck and, hopefully, they will come back with some silverware to put on our shelf but, if not, they can still be proud of what they have achieved.
