West Hoathly Bowls Club News story

West Hoathly ends the season with a final hurrah

01 Oct 2025

West Hoathly players turned out in force to take part in the final bowls bash of the season - the Closing Drive. This year’s annual event featured a barbecue buffet and three different formats of bowls, with members contributing a delicious array of cakes and pastries for afternoon tea.

Players were drawn into triples teams for the whole event, playing three different games of eight ends each. Although the accent was on fun and enjoyment, teamwork was quite important as no player could play in the same position twice.

There were also a number of quizzes, activities and competitions throughout the day, both in the clubhouse and on the green, plus a well-stocked raffle with all proceeds going to the Club.

Hearty congratulations and very well-played to the winning triples team shown below, and also well done to the other winners of the various activities enjoyed on the day:

Tournament winners - Nick Mitchell, Nick Lawson & Ronny Rossberg

Spot the Jack winner - Mark Chivers

Bowls Quiz winner - Roger de Brett

Winning bid for The Fox meal voucher - Pat Dunn & Martyn Dann

Spider winner - Ronny Rossberg

Target bowls winner - Mark Chivers

As always, making the day happen needs the time and energy of a committed team. This includes the awesome catering team of Martyn Dann on the barbecue and Ann Butcher steering the kitchen activities, with buffet contributions by Sandra Clarke, Pat Dunn and Faye de Brett. The raffle was impeccably organised by Carole Watson and Sheila Crisp, while Chris Champion arranged and coordinated all the bowls activities.

The enthusiastic support of so many members in providing cakes and donating raffle prizes, plus those other members who rolled their sleeves up on the day, helped make it both an immensely enjoyable day as well as a successful fundraising event and a memorable way to celebrate the final day of our outdoor season.
