West Hoathly Win Newick Shield

26 Jun 2021

The Newick Shield is an occasion we very much look forward to every year, a fixture that marks a long and friendly relationship between West Hoathly and Newick bowls clubs. It was the idea of the late John Wilkins form Newick and our President Dai Howick, who set up the original fixture in 2011, the centenary year for both clubs.

Like many events, we had to wipe the fixture off the calendar last year, so we were all eagerly awaiting the opportunity to renew our special rivalry once again. It was a hard fought affair with some great bowling on display, interspersed with much friendly banter, with West Hoathly eventually pulling away to regain the shield with a 99-82 victory.

We were delighted that Dai Howick was there to witness the contest and award the shield. Since 2011, West Hoathly have now won the shield on 6 occasions and Newick on three - an excellent record.
