Finals Weekend 2023

07 Sep 2023

The weather stayed fine for our Club Finals Weekend on 2/3 September.  We had a packed Saturday of finals which included the Mid Sussex Champion of Champions Final between Alex Payne of Buxted Park v Russell Doherty of Henfield.  Russell won the match and was presented with the trophy by Colin Morphew.

All our club games were hotly contested and were exciting to watch and the standard of play was exceptional.  It was good to see so many people coming to support the players, particularly many of our new members who had joined this year, it was the best turnout we have had for many years and, hopefully, will continue.

Our morning schedule consisted of:

  • 2 Wood Singles (Dave Dawson v Roger de Brett) which Roger won
  • Men’s Singles (Vic Green v Roy Williams) which Roy won
  • Captain’s Cup Semi Final (Iain Kinnell v Wendy Reason) which Iain won

Our afternoon schedule consisted of:

  • Ladies Singles (Karen West v Faye de Brett) which Faye won
  • Club Singles (Glyn Lyford v Roy Williams) which Roy won
  • Captain’s Cup Semi-Final (Gill Dawson v Martyn Dann) which Martyn won
  • Drawn Triples (Chris Champion, Dave Beard & Marion Jones v Sam Broomfield, Roger de Brett & Janet Mills) which Sam, Roger and Janet won.

There was a presentation at the end of the day for the winners and runners-up.

Sunday was a less busy day with only one game in the morning:

  • Captain’s Cup Final (Iain Kinnell v Martyn Dann) which Martyn won

The afternoon schedule consisted of:

  • 100 Up Final (Chris Champion v Gill Dawson) which Chris won
  • Mixed Pairs Final (Roger & Faye de Brett v Gordon Hall and Sandra Clarke) Roger & Faye won
  • Drawn Pairs Final (Janet Mills & Bill Willoughby v Roy Williams & Martyn Dann) Roy & Martyn won.

Again, presentations were made after all games had been played.

The catering was organised by Sandra Clarke and her team of helpers, who did a wonderful job as usual, providing us with a lunch buffet and cakes in the afternoon.  A big thank you also to everybody who made the cakes, it is good to see that people are so willing to help and contribute towards making this a successful weekend.

Thank you also to all who entered the competitions, without you there would be no finals day or the accompanying friendly rivalry.  We must not forget Glyn and his team of greenkeepers for their work in getting the green ready and making sure that the rinks were up and running for the weekend.

Finally, I cannot close this news item without thanking Chris Champion for his hard work in organising all the competitions and the finals.  There is a lot of work involved and Chris always carried out his duties with a smile and a friendly word.  Unfortunately, he is standing down after this year but I believe that Vic Green is taking it over next year, so please give him all the support and help he needs to make this as successful as it has been this year.
